Bromley 2 Dorchester 1 – BSS – 14/08/2010

Bromley 2 Dorchester 1 – BSS – 14/08/2010
Bromley got off to a winning if unspectacular start to the new season edging out Dorchester despite being reduced to ten men for the last five minutes and with both sides missing penalties.
The Ravens started poorly, looking very flat and they were behind on 6mins when a sweetly struck Ryan Hill free kick curled in at the far post. Dorchester should have been two up shortly after but Matt Groves hit the post and then blazed the rebound over. With Bromley looking drained of confidence and lacking direction they got a vital piece of good fortune that pulled them back into the game on 34mins when a wayward Wes Daly shot deflected off Paul Vines and bounced into the net past the wrong footed Magpies Keeper Regan Coward. Then five minutes later Bromley were gifted the opportunity to take the lead when Coward flattened Nic McDonnell with both feet when faced with a one on one. The Keeper was lucky to escape with a yellow card and his good fortune continued when McDonnell ballooned the spot kick over the bar. The Ravens had two more good chances late in the half when Tony Finn set up Daly who forced a save from Coward and then Finn shot narrowly wide himself soon after.
Dorchester started the second half on top, but failed to create any real chances and just sent in a series of high balls that Jamie Butler chose to punch away. Bromley slowly improved with Vines heading wide from a Finn free kick, and it was Finn’s set piece skills that eventually won the game for The Ravens when he sent in a pin point cross for sub Warren McBean to head home from six yards on 72mins. Both sides continued to press with Hill forcing an amazing save from Butler with another great free kick and Finn was just off target at the other end. Then with five minutes to go Jerome Sobers conceded a penalty with a rash tackle in the box and was ordered off by Referee Hicks. Hill stepped up to take the kick and his effort was superbly parried away by Butler diving to his right. The Magpies continued to press for a point, but once again Butler was there to block Stuart Douglas’ effort in injury time to preserve the points for Bromley.
Quote for the game, ‘That’s why you have to keep McBean.’ – Mash.
